The human being is an indivisible whole. If a movement is made in the subastragalar joint, movement is also obtained in the remainder of the structural, visceral and craniosacral system. If for example we are out walking and we sprain our ankle (and there is no loss in tissue continuity) we will begin to limp until this movement affects the remainder of the body. When the osteopath explores and locates the anomaly in the movement of the foot, he or she will find the same anomaly in the rest of the body and will decide upon the treatment, with the result being not just a change in the movement of the foot but in the rest of the body too; the patient will feel differently when getting up from the treatment table.
If we take as an example a triangular-based pyramid, the sides of which are elastic, any change in the length of one of the elastic sides will change the position of the star and the length of all the sides. The objective of the osteopath is based on osseous globality, whereby we will not force the star into the centre, but will ensure that the length of each elastic is the same, which in itself will position the star at the centre of the pyramid. It is not a case of undertaking any techniques upon the star itself, but being aware of the state of the six elastic sides, knowing which one is altering function and resolving it by checking that all six lengths of elastic are once again equal.
